LED Light Therapy
You may have heard of a new scientific-sounding technology called “LED”. It stands for “Light Emitting Diodes” and is being used in spas to treat aging skin, acne and muscle/joint aches and pains.
For those who would like to cut to the chase and know if LED is works (for acne, aging skin and pain), the answer is yes. Research has shown that LED phototherapy can: increase circulation, accelerate tissue repair, decrease wrinkles, decrease inflammation, improve skin tone, texture, and clarity, ease muscle and joint pain, stiffness, spasm, arthritis and kill acne bacteria. Phototherapy is known for its healing and anti-inflammatory properties and has a variety of applications across many medical fields
Basic LED Facts
In basic terms, a LED treatment is the application of light energy (photons) to your tissue to gain therapeutic benefit. You can think of it as a battery charger for compromised skin cells. Based on NASA research, Celluma delivers blue, red and near-infrared light energy to safely treat a wide variety of conditions. Each wavelength is absorbed by different molecules that act as a signaling mechanism for different cellular processes. For example, some reduce inflammation and some kill bacteria, while others enhance localized circulation.
This image is a representation of the three wavelengths (colors) used by Celluma LED and penetration depths.
LED Facial Treatment For Acne
The blue light in used for the treatment of acne by causing the destruction of propionibacterium acnes which is the bacteria responsible for acne. However, Celluma delivers both the red and blue light for the acne treatment and research shows using both is more effective than the blue light by itself. Celluma light therapy works safely and effectively, without abrasive chemicals, harmful UV-rays or side effects, to destroy this acne-causing bacteria — not only clearing up existing blemishes, but preventing future breakouts before they happen. A series of 10 – 12 sessions is recommended for best results.
LED Facial Treatment For Aging Skin
LED facial treatment results are not as dramatic as plastic surgery, IPL or laser, however, it is a more gentle, natural and less expensive way to go. The great thing is that LED light does not heat the skin (like a tanning bed) so there is no thermal damage, no burning or removal of skin. Without external damage, the light does its work on your skin with zero pain or discomfort. Using red near infrared light wavelengths, Celluma LED is scientifically proven to stimulate fibroblasts that produce collagen giving young skin its plump look. Celluma’s low-level light therapy is a safe, effective and convenient way to achieve a healthy, youthful glow in a natural, non-toxic, non-invasive manner. Several studies in the Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy, have shown that red and infrared light can improve the look of aging skin.
LED For Aches, Pains & Wounds
Cellum LED is scientifically proven to relieve arthritic pain, muscle and joint pain and stiffness. Its powerful, deeply penetrating wavelengths are absorbed by photoacceptors in the mitrochondria. This process increases the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) — the fuel that drives all cells. This boost of cellular energy results in a cascade of metabolic events leading to an increase in micro-circulation, tissue repair, and a decrease in inflammation and pain.
Currently there are hundreds of brands of LED devices available but unfortunately not all of them are proven effective. Celluma is the brand of LED equipment we use at Balance Spa. We believe that using the right LED equipment is essential to achieving results. Celluma (made by Biophotas) was originally created for veterans to help with accelerated wound healing. Biophotas has extensive proven research that documents the efficacy of Celluma. For more information on Celluma or the company, go to their website.
